Vietnam Affirms Proactive Global Role at UNGA, Eyes Deeper US-Canada Ties

SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIET NAM Government News Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang Speaking to the press ahead of the trip, Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang said the trip stands as a testament of Viet Nam's foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralisation, diversification and proactive, extensive international integration. At the high-level general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, General Secretary and President To Lam is expected to reaffirm Viet Nam's strong support for the central role of the United Nations in multilateral cooperation and respect for international law. He will also share Viet Nam's experience after 40 years of Doi Moi and put forward practical initiatives to address global challenges, including climate change, sustainable development and governance of emerging core technologies. Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang highlighted Viet Nam's increasingly substantive contributions to the United Nations, including hosting the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, known as the Ha Noi Convention; being re-elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term; chairing the 35th Meeting of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea; and having a Vietnamese representative elected as a Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea for the 2026–2035 term. Viet Nam has also promoted initiatives on the International Day of Play and the International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development for 2027–2036, while contributing to UN peacekeeping operations and international humanitarian efforts. Regarding Viet Nam–U.S. relations, the Deputy Minister said the two countries have developed a solid foundation of cooperation over more than three decades, with economic, trade and investment ties serving as important drivers. Cooperation is expanding into strategic areas such as science and technology, innovation, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, energy transition and high-quality human resources. The bilateral activities in the U.S. are expected to contribute to implementing common understandings reached by the two countries' senior leaders, strengthening high-level exchanges and promoting the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a stable, substantive, effective and sustainable manner. Regarding Viet Nam–Canada relations, Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang noted that the two countries have built a solid foundation after more than half a century of diplomatic relations and nearly a decade of Comprehensive Partnership. The two sides are seeking to make science and technology, innovation, AI, semiconductors, clean energy and human resources new drivers of bilateral cooperation. The working trip is expected to further deepen Viet Nam's relations with the United Nations, the U.S. and Canada, while affirming Viet Nam's proactive, active and responsible role in addressing global issues and contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world./.
