Trat Commerce Department to Survey Border Trade, Assess Impact of Border Closure

The Department of Commerce in Thailand's eastern province of Trat is set to launch on-site surveys to assess the impact of border checkpoint closures between Thailand and Cambodia on the local economy. This initiative aims to accurately gauge the current situation through interviews with traders and relevant stakeholders, and to deliberate on future measures. Trat province has several border checkpoints with Cambodia, which have played a crucial role in the regional economy, particularly in border trade. The closure of these checkpoints could lead to disruptions in logistics, delays in goods circulation, and consequently, a contraction in economic activities. The Department of Commerce intends to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze these specific impacts, and to formulate support measures to minimize the effects on the livelihoods of traders and local residents, as well as to prepare for the smooth resumption of trade once the checkpoints are reopened. This survey is expected to highlight the vulnerability of the border economy and the significant impact of changes in the international situation on regional economies. Based on the survey findings, the Department of Commerce plans to collaborate with the government and related agencies to make concrete recommendations for stabilizing the regional economy.
