Vietnam Receives Additional US Resources for War Aftermath Settlement

Vietnam has received additional resources from the United States to address the lingering effects of war, including support for Agent Orange victims and dioxin remediation projects. This initiative underscores the deepening bilateral relationship and aims to mobilize international resources for Vietnam's development priorities. A delegation from the Ho Chi Minh City chapter of the Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange/dioxin (VAVA HCMC) visited the US to directly inform American friends about the long-term consequences of Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam and seek their support. This effort is part of the Bien Hoa Air Base Dioxin Remediation Project, launched in 2021 across six provinces and cities. The project has already supported over 32,000 people with disabilities, including Agent Orange/dioxin victims, exceeding 60% of its targets. It is set to be extended to Ca Mau and Quang Ngai provinces. These US contributions represent 17% of USAID projects restarted in Vietnam, highlighting their significance in Vietnam-US relations and defense cooperation. Specifically, scholarships worth 1 million VND (approximately 38 USD) are being provided to students, encouraging them to overcome difficulties and continue their studies. Furthermore, Vietnam is developing Country Programme Documents for cooperation with UN development agencies for 2027–2031, which will help mobilize international resources for the country’s development priorities and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Vietnam also plans to connect its national digital identification application, VNeID, with the electronic identification systems of Singapore and Laos, with a view to expanding the connection to other ASEAN countries. This initiative aims to enhance citizen convenience and regional cooperation in an increasingly digital world. Under Vietnam's one-party system, national development plans and international cooperation are closely coordinated. Addressing the legacies of past wars, such as the Agent Orange issue, is considered crucial from both social welfare and foreign policy perspectives, serving as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with the US on humanitarian grounds. As Vietnam continues its economic growth, it is demonstrating a commitment to resolving domestic social issues and enhancing international collaboration by leveraging such international support.
