A new law in the Philippines has taken effect, granting the Department of Education (DepEd) increased authority to determine teaching methods, ensuring students master lessons before advancing. This measure aims to ease rigid prescriptions in curriculum development.
REPUBLIC ACT No. 12322 has lapsed into law, giving the Department of Education (DepEd) greater authority to determine teaching methods aimed at ensuring students master lessons before advancing to the next grade. Approved on Aug. 2, the measure amends the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 and removes some rigid prescriptions on curriculum development. Under the law, the curriculum should use the approach DepEd considers most effective in ensuring mastery of knowledge and skills at each level. It also requires the agency to conduct a comprehensive curriculum review every five years to keep instruction aligned with global academic trends and changing labor-market needs.
