21-year-old arrested for stealing 1.6 tons of durian in Dak Lak

A 21-year-old unemployed man has been arrested in Dak Lak Province for allegedly sneaking into local durian orchards at night and stealing 1.6 tons of fruit. The man confessed to traveling from Hai Phong to Dak Lak for work but resorting to durian theft to make ends meet after losing his job and running out of money. Tang Ngoc Hien was apprehended by police on August 31, following complaints from locals about suspicious activity. Authorities seized all the stolen durian. Hien reportedly scouted for orchards with minimal supervision or foot traffic, targeting them at night. He had successfully carried out raids twice before being caught during his third attempt. Authorities determined that Hien had stolen over 1.6 tons of durian and swiftly recovered the fruits, returning them to their owners. The incident has drawn attention due to the unusual scale of the theft, involving a high-value fruit that fetches significant prices domestically. Under Vietnam's one-party system, maintaining social order is a priority, and law enforcement tends to be strict on property crimes. Dak Lak Province is a major agricultural region in Vietnam, known for its production of durian and coffee. While Vietnam's economy has seen remarkable growth in recent years, socio-economic challenges such as poverty and unemployment persist in both rural and urban areas, and this incident may reflect some of these underlying issues.
