Nakhon Pathom Governor Promotes GI-Certified Pomelo for Community Income and Agri-Tourism

In Nakhon Pathom Province, central Thailand, the provincial governor conducted an inspection of the "Suan Pan Thong" pomelo orchards in Nakhon Chai Si district. This visit served to reconfirm the value of the Geographical Indication (GI) certification for the district's signature pomelos and to utilize it as a catalyst for regional economic revitalization. The governor toured fruit orchards managed by pomelo farmers by boat and participated in harvesting activities. This particular variety of pomelo from the region is highly regarded for its quality and flavor, and the GI certification plays a crucial role in protecting its uniqueness and enhancing its brand value. Through this inspection, the governor emphasized that establishing a regional brand utilizing GI certification not only directly leads to increased income for farmers but also contributes to the promotion of agri-tourism, which incorporates agricultural experiences. Nakhon Pathom Province, located near Bangkok, is known for its rich agricultural landscape. In recent years, the Thai government has been promoting the acquisition of GI certification for regional specialty products, aiming for sustainable development of the local economy by enhancing their brand power. This initiative for pomelos can be seen as a move in line with such national policies. Besides pomelos, various other agricultural products are cultivated in this region, and there are other specialty items that could potentially be eligible for GI certification. The province plans to expand the use of GI certification in the future, aiming to enhance the economic independence of the entire local community and bolster its appeal as a tourist attraction for Thailand.
