A truck helper was killed and another was seriously injured in Lucena City, Philippines, after a loaded dump truck shifted from a self-loading truck and pinned them in a freak accident. Police are investigating the cause. According to a report released by the Quezon Police Provincial Office (QPPO), the incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, along the Eco-Tourism Road in Barangay Ibabang Talim. An Isuzu self-loading truck was transporting a dump truck on its flatbed, driven by an individual known only by the alias “Christian.” Two truck helpers, identified as “John” and “Rene,” were seated on the headboard of the self-loading truck, positioned between the cab and the loaded dump truck. While the vehicle was in motion, the helpers noticed that the upper portion of the dump truck was about to hit overhead power lines and alerted the driver. Police stated that after the driver stopped the vehicle, the locking mechanisms and chains securing the dump truck unexpectedly gave way, causing the cargo to lurch forward. The shifting dump truck pinned the two helpers’ legs against the truck’s cab, resulting in serious injuries for both. The victims were rushed to the Quezon Medical Center, where John later died during treatment. Rene remains confined in the hospital. Police confirmed that the truck owner and the victims’ families are working towards an amicable settlement. This incident highlights potential issues within the safety protocols of the logistics and transportation sector in the Philippines, possibly necessitating a review of securing methods for heavy cargo and the safe positioning of workers during transport.
