ADB Funds Irrigation Upgrades in Three Vietnamese Provinces

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide US$42.76 million (approximately VND1.1 trillion) for a project to modernize irrigation systems in three Vietnamese provinces. The "Climate Adaptation Through Irrigation Modernisation Project" aims to support farmers facing challenges such as drought, shifting rainfall patterns, and growing competition for water resources. Specifically, the plan is to directly benefit around 295,500 people by modernizing seven irrigation systems and improving water management. Vietnam is facing the challenge of water resource instability due to the impacts of climate change, even as it continues to achieve economic growth. Particularly in the agricultural sector, the efficiency of irrigation systems is crucial for improving productivity and enhancing adaptation capacity to climate change. The ADB's support this time is an important step towards achieving the sustainable development goals promoted by the Vietnamese government. The ADB recognizes Vietnam as one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia and has supported the country through various projects, including loans to expand access to finance for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and support for wastewater infrastructure development in Khanh Hoa province.
