Indonesia: Calls Grow for Corporate Punishment in Bogor Land Rights Bribery Case

Indonesian civil society group IM57+ is strongly urging the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to enhance corporate punishment in a suspected bribery case involving the improper acquisition of land rights certificates (HGB) in the Bogor region. The group asserts that, based on lessons learned from similar past incidents, strict penalties for corporations are essential for eradicating systemic corruption, going beyond individual accountability. The allegations of illicit land rights acquisition in Bogor highlight structural issues that often make the region a breeding ground for collusion and corruption in real estate development and land administration. IM57+ argues that the KPK should hold corporations, such as developers and related companies, accountable for these corrupt practices and impose appropriate sanctions to prevent similar incidents from recurring. Corruption control has been a long-standing challenge in Indonesia, with corrupt practices frequently pointed out in large-scale development projects and land-related cases. In the past, even when individuals were punished, the underlying corporate or systemic corrupt structures often remained unaddressed, eroding public trust. IM57+s current proposal can be seen as an effort to achieve more effective corruption eradication by learning from these past lessons.
