Sleeper Bus Collides with Truck on Vietnam Expressway, 5 Injured

A sleeper bus collided with a truck on an expressway in Ha Tinh province, central Vietnam, on September 6, injuring five passengers. The incident occurred around 3:50 AM at Km508+000 on the Bai Vot - Ham Nghi Expressway. The bus, carrying dozens of passengers, was traveling north when it crashed into the rear of a truck moving in the same direction. The five injured passengers sustained injuries primarily to their neck, arms, and legs. Other passengers were dazed or suffered minor abrasions and managed to exit the vehicle on their own. The accident scene showed the front of the bus severely damaged with a shattered windshield and luggage strewn across the road. The truck also sustained significant damage to its rear. The two vehicles blocked two lanes, causing traffic congestion extending hundreds of meters in the northbound direction from 4:00 AM. Authorities redirected traffic to exit at the expressway interchange onto Provincial Road 548 and then onto National Highway 1. According to the expressway management unit, there was no rain at the time of the accident, road conditions were normal, and traffic safety systems were in place. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. The Bai Vot - Ham Nghi Expressway is approximately 35 km long, with a total investment of over VND 7.6 trillion (approximately $300 million USD). Construction began in early 2023, and it is scheduled to open in April 2025. The initial phase will have four lanes, with a maximum speed limit of 90 km/h and a minimum of 60 km/h.
