HD Hyundai Launches First Vessel, Signaling Revival of Philippine Shipbuilding

Seven years after the collapse of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction-Philippines in 2019, the country’s shipbuilding industry has taken a significant step towards revival with the launch of the Orion Jade, the first vessel built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Philippines (HHIP) at the Agila Subic Shipyard. The 115,000-ton crude oil tanker is the first ship constructed by HHIP in the Subic Bay Freeport, symbolizing the recovery of the nation's shipbuilding capabilities. HHIP is part of the South Korean HD Hyundai Group, a global leader in shipbuilding and offshore engineering. The company took over the shipyard after Hanjin's withdrawal, aiming to revitalize the shipbuilding sector in the Philippines. This launch holds considerable importance for the Philippine economy. Shipbuilding is an industry that generates high-level skills and significant employment, and its revival is expected to contribute to regional economic revitalization. Furthermore, given the Philippines' strategic location at the heart of maritime Southeast Asia and its role in key international shipping routes, strengthening its shipbuilding capacity could also enhance national security and economic independence.
