Cambodia Joins China-ASEAN Media Forum for Cultural Exchange and Cooperation
A delegation from Cambodia's Ministry of Information participated in the annual meeting of the South and Southeast Asian Media Network and a cultural exchange event in Yunnan, China. The event focused on media cooperation, cultural exchange, and promoting mutual understanding, peace, and prosperity in the region, including discussions on the 'Looking Southward' perspective through cities and the role of media in the AI era.
A delegation from the Ministry of Information of the Kingdom of Cambodia participated in the annual meeting of the South and Southeast Asian Media Network and a cultural exchange event held in Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, from July 13 to 17, 2026. The event, themed "Looking Southward with Cities as Eyes," aimed to foster media cooperation, cultural exchange, and promote mutual understanding, peace, and prosperity in the region. The Cambodian delegation was led by Prak Thav Omidah, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Information, representing Minister Net Pheaktra. Key activities included the opening ceremony of the annual meeting, discussions on national storytelling, a roundtable on media systems in South and Southeast Asia, a Yunnan-Cambodia media cooperation meeting, and cultural and tourism exchange programs. Participants explored how media can narrate Asian stories in the AI era, emphasizing the ethical use of digital technology, combating misinformation, and promoting professional and responsible journalism. Yunnan Province, with its significant geographical location and rich history and culture, was highlighted as a crucial bridge connecting China with countries in South and Southeast Asia. The theme underscored the role of cities not just as development hubs but as living witnesses to culture, innovation, people-to-people exchanges, and the region's aspirations for peace and prosperity. As part of the cultural exchange, the Cambodian delegation engaged in activities such as planting a Corypha umbraculifera L. tree and participating in city tours and dialogues under the concept "Achieving Dreams Together: Harmonious Homes" in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture's Jinghong City. This program provided an opportunity for participants to learn about the harmonious coexistence of people, cultures, cities, and nature, as well as to strengthen exchanges on tourism and sustainable development. On July 16, 2026, the Cambodian delegation will attend the 2026 Global Mayors' Dialogue in Xishuangbanna under the theme "Tropical Forests and Homes: Coexistence, Co-construction, and Sharing." This event focuses on integrating nature conservation, urban development, tourism promotion, and harmonious living with the environment. The delegation will also participate in a tourism promotion event titled "A Type of Life in Yunnan" and the 5th International Promotion Festival of the Elephant Forum at the InterContinental Xishuangbanna. These activities contribute to enhancing understanding of Yunnan's culture, nature, tourism, and its potential for international promotion, along with related regions. Cambodia's participation in this event demonstrates its commitment to strengthening media and cultural cooperation with China and other regional countries. It provided an opportunity for Cambodia to share its national narrative of peace, development, cultural heritage preservation, and modernization of the media sector in the digital age. Through these meetings and exchange programs, the Ministry of Information of Cambodia has affirmed its readiness to continue strengthening partnerships with regional media networks to promote content exchange, journalist training, ethical digital technology use, the fight against fake news, and the promotion of professional, ethical, and publicly accountable journalism.
