Hornet Swarm Kills Dog in Chiang Rai After Nest Fire

A massive swarm of angry hornets went on a late-night rampage in Chiang Rai, Thailand, after a botched attempt to destroy their nest using fire. The aggressive insects attacked a government housing facility between the night of September 23 and the early hours of September 24, resulting in the tragic death of a local dog. The incident took place at a housing facility on Kraison Sit Road in the Doi Tong community of Mueang Chiang Rai District, where hornets had built a large nest on a building wall and ceiling. Fortunately, no people were present outside during the attack, averting human casualties. However, a dog, estimated to be between five and ten years old, was stung multiple times and died at the scene. By morning, the swarm had returned to its nest, and the situation calmed. Residents discovered clear signs of a failed attempt to eliminate the nest, with ashes and dead hornets scattered on the ground. Experts believe the reckless use of fire triggered the violent response from the hornets, who swarmed out to defend their home when threatened. The dog was an unfortunate victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. To ensure community safety, residents and safety workers quickly implemented protective measures. They sprayed chemicals around the Chiang Rai housing area to prevent hornets from entering living and working spaces. The area is now on high alert to prevent further insect attacks. In response, local authorities issued a stern public warning, stating that anyone caught attempting to harm or burn the hornet nest will face immediate legal action.
