Indonesia Halts Operations of 50 Businesses Amid Forest Fire Crackdown

Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forestry has issued orders to suspend the operations of 50 business entities across 8 provinces as part of the implementation of a Presidential Instruction (Inpres) to prevent forest and land fires (Karhutla). This measure reiterates the government's firm stance against illegal land clearing and deforestation. The ministry's policy is to suspend operations for businesses deemed to be indirectly or directly involved in the occurrence or exacerbation of forest fires. Specifically, illegal slash-and-burn agriculture and development activities that disregard environmental regulations are considered problematic. Large-scale forest fires are prone to occur in Indonesia, especially during the dry season, and many of them are man-made. These fires cause severe haze, leading to health problems for the public, flight cancellations, and in some cases, escalating into international environmental issues. This measure aims to prevent the recurrence of such situations and promote sustainable land use. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry stated that it will continue to strengthen monitoring and take strict legal action against violations. The 8 provinces targeted are believed to include areas that have frequently experienced forest fires in the past, and the government intends to proceed with concentrated measures.
