Thailand Approves 1.78 Billion Baht Financing for New Friendship Bridge in Luang Prabang

The Thai Cabinet has approved financial assistance totalling 1,783 million baht for the Lao PDR to support the construction of a new Mekong River bridge linking Ban Xieng Maen in Chomphet District, Luang Prabang Province, with Luang Prabang city. The decision was made on September 8, 2026. The project will be implemented through Thailand’s Neighboring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (NEDA). It involves the construction of a reinforced concrete bridge approximately 500 metres long, along with approach roads connecting the bridge to the main highway network. Under the financing arrangement, 50% of the funding will come from the Thai government’s annual budget for fiscal years 2028–2031, while the remaining 50% will be provided through loans raised by NEDA from domestic financial institutions and on-lent to the Lao government. The financial assistance is subject to conditions aimed at supporting Thai businesses. These include requirements for Thai construction contractors and consulting engineers to participate in the project, as well as the use of construction materials produced in Thailand for at least 50% of the contract value. The new bridge is expected to strengthen transport connectivity between Luang Prabang and neighbouring Thailand, and facilitate travel, trade, and economic cooperation between the two countries. Laos, currently under a one-party system, prioritizes its relationship with China and Vietnam for economic development. This infrastructure support from Thailand is seen as part of deepening regional economic cooperation, though it may also increase economic reliance on Thailand. The Lao economy, dependent on hydropower, mining, and tourism, faces challenges like inflation and debt.
