Indonesia Warns of Prolonged Drought Until Early 2027 Due to Strong El Niño

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has warned that a strong El Niño phenomenon could lead to severe drought conditions in the country until early 2027. The agency urged regional governments to enhance preparedness measures against potential water scarcity and increased wildfire risks. BNPB Head Agus Wibowo highlighted the potential for a prolonged impact from the strong El Niño, emphasizing the importance of water resource management and fire prevention. He stated that regional governments need to identify areas potentially facing water shortages and ensure the availability of reservoirs and alternative water sources. Furthermore, as dry weather increases the risk of forest and peatland fires, the BNPB instructed local authorities to strengthen early warning systems and deploy resources for rapid firefighting operations. Past El Niño events have been known to cause widespread droughts, impacting agricultural production and food supply. Indonesia, with its tropical rainforest climate, typically experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. However, El Niño can significantly alter rainfall patterns, leading to prolonged or intensified dry spells.
