Philippines, Japan, US Conduct Joint Maritime Drills in West Philippine Sea

The Philippines, Japan, and the United States conducted a five-day maritime exercise in the West Philippine Sea from July 21 to 25. This was part of the 17th Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MMCA) involving the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the U.S. Pacific Command, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The iteration enhanced maritime capabilities by incorporating anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training and exercising standard operating procedures and tactics. The drills brought together warships, fighter jets, surveillance aircraft, and ASW capabilities from the participating nations. Philippine assets included the BRP Antonio Luna, a Philippine Navy AW109 helicopter, Philippine Air Force FA-50 fighter aircraft, TC90, an A-29B Super Tucano, a C-208B aircraft, and a Sokol search and rescue helicopter. The Philippine Coast Guard also deployed the BRP Melchora Aquino and BRP Malabrigo to support the activity. Participating assets from Japan included the Murasame-class destroyer JS Yudachi, while the U.S. Navy contributed an Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Santa Barbara and a P-8A Poseidon assigned to Patrol Squadron 26. The exercises commenced a day after the China Coast Guard used a water cannon against Philippine Navy personnel stationed on the Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal. Washington stated that Beijing's pattern of provocation against lawful Philippine maritime operations undermines regional peace and stability and contradicts China's repeated commitments to resolve disputes peacefully. This joint exercise demonstrates concrete cooperation among the Philippines, Japan, and the U.S. in response to China's growing assertiveness in the South China Sea, aiming to strengthen regional security cooperation. For the Philippines, protecting its sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea is crucial economically and strategically. Japan and the United States, by deepening security cooperation with the Philippines, aim to maintain a free and open order in the Indo-Pacific region.
