Ilocos Power Utility Backs Bataan Nuclear Plant Revival

The Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC) has expressed support for the revival of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) as an option to bolster the Philippines' energy security. In a lecture titled “Powering the Countryside: Rural Electrification in the Marcos Senior Era,” INEC representatives called for a re-evaluation of the BNPP project, which was initially championed by the previous Marcos administration in 1979 as a long-term solution to the country's growing power demand and dependence on imported oil. The plant, slated to begin operations just before the 1986 People Power Revolution, was ultimately mothballed due to safety concerns and political turmoil, never having generated electricity. However, in recent years, the reintroduction of nuclear power in the Philippines has been a subject of discussion, driven by increasing electricity demand and the need to mitigate risks associated with volatile fossil fuel prices. INEC's endorsement is seen as a significant voice from the provincial level, reflecting hopes for stabilized rural power supply and addressing the national challenge of diversifying energy sources. The Philippines currently relies heavily on fossil fuels like coal and natural gas, making its energy sector vulnerable to price fluctuations influenced by global events. The revival of nuclear power could offer a path towards more stable electricity generation. Nevertheless, the substantial costs and stringent safety protocols required for BNPP's operation and maintenance remain critical considerations, alongside persistent public safety concerns. Overcoming these challenges and securing public acceptance will be crucial for any potential revival.
