Battambang Provincial Referral Hospital Garden Becomes Chaotic Market

In Battambang province, western Cambodia, the once well-maintained garden in front of the provincial referral hospital has devolved into a chaotic scene, with food stalls and seating occupying the public space. Hospital officials express concern that this situation is obstructing traffic and increasing the risk of accidents. Several years ago, the riverbank and garden area in front of the hospital were redeveloped as part of a beautification project. This included the installation of tiled walkways and landscaping to create a pleasant environment for residents to stroll and exercise. Illicit structures that were previously present were removed, transforming the area into a space for relaxation and community exercise. However, in recent days, the situation has drastically changed. The road in front of the hospital is now lined with food carts, and tables and chairs for customers have been placed on the sidewalks and the garden itself. This has blocked the pathways intended for residents' use, making morning and evening strolls difficult. Dr. Han Udom, Director of Battambang Provincial Referral Hospital, stated, "While I was away on a mission for a few days, pushcarts and food stalls filled the area in front of the hospital, with chairs scattered across the garden, resulting in a loss of order and aesthetics." Dr. Udom further explained that these stalls and carts were previously organized to sell goods along the northern wall of the hospital. However, during his absence, they relocated to the public space directly in front of the hospital. The hospital director intends to report these issues to the municipal authorities to request their intervention, warning that otherwise, the disorder and chaos in front of the hospital will recur.
