Cambodia Intensifies Push for Regional Automotive Assembly Hub Status

PHNOM PENH, July 31, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia is stepping up efforts to position itself as a competitive regional automotive manufacturing and assembly hub, with the government pledging continued support for investors and encouraging further expansion of the sector, officials said Friday. Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), chaired a high‑level meeting to review progress in automotive assembly investments. The session brought together CDC leaders, ministry representatives and senior executives from major automotive companies operating in the country. Discussions focused on the overall development of the automotive assembly sector, a priority industry under Cambodia’s industrial diversification drive. Companies presented feedback and proposals, while government and private‑sector representatives discussed solutions to address challenges and support growth. Chanthol reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting automotive assembly investors, stressing the industry’s role in Cambodia’s economic transformation as the country seeks to diversify its industrial base and move toward higher‑value manufacturing. Cambodia’s automotive industry has attracted investment from global brands, with eight operational plants producing cars, motorcycles and electric vehicles for domestic use and export. The sector has generated more than $1.1 billion in industrial value and created over 1,300 skilled jobs. Despite this progress, Cambodia remains heavily reliant on imports. Vehicle imports surged 31.9 percent year‑on‑year in the first half of 2026 to $1.56 billion, underscoring both rising demand and the need to expand domestic assembly capacity. Both government and private‑sector representatives reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation aimed at developing Cambodia into a capable and competitive automotive hub in the region.
