Phnom Penh Accelerates Drainage System Restoration Ahead of Rainy Season

Phnom Penh City is accelerating the restoration of its drainage canals and sewer systems in preparation for the upcoming rainy season, aiming to prevent flooding that could damage homes and infrastructure. This initiative is being carried out under the directives and support of Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng. Following similar efforts in Don Penh, Chamkar Mon, and 7 Makara districts, the focus has now shifted to Tuol Kork district. On the morning of August 5th, a team led by Ek Khun Doeun, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, representing Governor Khuong Sreng, personally inspected and supervised the priority restoration of numerous drainage canals and sewer systems in Tuol Kork district. According to Deputy Governor Ek Khun Doeun, the restoration work in Tuol Kork includes three drainage canals with a total length of 2,760 meters. These are the Boeung Salang Canal (920 meters) in Boeung Salang commune, the Tuol Kork Station 1 Reservoir Canal (1,100 meters) in Boeung Kak 1 commune, and the Tuol Kork Station 2 Reservoir Canal (740 meters) in Boeung Kak 2 commune. Additionally, the project involves the restoration of several sewer lines: Sewer line along Street 245 from Street 182 to Street 230, spanning approximately 1,040 meters across Phsar Depo 1, Tuol Sangke 3, and Phsar Daeum Kor communes. Sewer line along Street 336 from Street 215 to Street 261, covering about 1,720 meters in Phsar Daeum Kor and Boeung Salang communes. Sewer line along Street 182 from Street 215 to Street 245, approximately 3,600 meters long. Sewer line along Street 253 from Street 128 to Street 230, spanning about 2,000 meters across Tuol Sangke 1, 2, and 3 communes. Sewer line along Street 257 from Street 128 to Street 230, covering approximately 2,100 meters in Tuol Sangke 1, 2, and 3 communes. Sewer line along Street 261 from Street 182 to Street 230, approximately 1,060 meters long in Tuol Sangke 3 commune. Deputy Governor Ek Khun Doeun further stated that 13 vehicles will be utilized, with teams working concurrently. In line with Governor Khuong Sreng's instructions, the authorities of the five central districts are collaborating with the Phnom Penh Department of Public Works and Transport to pump out and clean sludge from the sewer systems, preparing to mitigate flooding before the rainy season. To date, the restoration of sewer systems has been completed in three districts: Don Penh, Chamkar Mon, and 7 Makara. Furthermore, Deputy Governor Ek Khun Doeun has instructed district and commune authorities to inspect locations highly susceptible to flooding, ensuring the teams focus their efforts effectively. He emphasized the need to connect smaller drainage systems to main conduits to facilitate water flow and guarantee no flooding occurs this rainy season. In addition, the Deputy Governor appealed to citizens to dispose of their waste properly, maintaining cleanliness and environmental hygiene, which will also help prevent blockages and enhance the city's aesthetics.
