Cambodian Pardon Review Committee Emphasizes Transparency and Justice Ahead of Water Festival

In Cambodia's northwestern Banteay Meanchey province, a committee was convened to review requests for sentence reductions and pardons for inmates ahead of the 2026 Water Festival. Provincial Deputy Governor Mr. Khu Pov presided over the meeting as the high representative of Provincial Governor Mr. Oun Ratry. During the meeting, strict adherence to transparency, justice, and legal principles in the review process for inmate requests was emphasized. Deputy Governor Khu Pov instructed committee members and relevant departments to exercise utmost diligence in reviewing applications, acting with responsibility in accordance with legal provisions and relevant regulations. This aims to ensure that requests for sentence reductions and pardons are processed with integrity and high effectiveness. The primary objective of this meeting was to thoroughly examine, discuss, and evaluate applications from inmates who meet the legal and stipulated conditions. Subsequently, the case files will be forwarded to the National Committee for further procedures and final decision. As a result of the meeting, the committee meticulously reviewed the files of each inmate. The review considered the concrete progress in behavioral reform, adherence to prison discipline, outcomes of educational and rehabilitation programs, and other conditions stipulated by law. This process is designed to ensure the rule of law, transparency, and justice, providing opportunities for reformed inmates to reunite with their families and contribute to national development during this meaningful national holiday.
