Avocado farmers in Mondulkiri province are celebrating a bountiful harvest this year, thanks to favorable weather conditions that have led to abundant fruit yields and high-quality produce. Alongside the harvest, farmers are urging consumers to choose products with clear origins to support local farmers and ensure consumer safety. Mr. Long Vibol, a 56-year-old avocado farmer residing in Chamkar Tei village, Spean Mean Chey commune, Sen Monorom city, told Kampuchea Thmey on August 1st that he and his family are currently busy harvesting the round variety of avocado, known as 'Avocado Donte,' which is yielding numerous fruits of good quality this year due to favorable weather. He noted that some farmers began harvesting as early as May, but his farm's harvest started in early August, depending on the avocado variety. Mr. Vibol's farm spans 5 hectares and cultivates three types of avocados: the round 'Donte,' the long '034,' and the 'Bota' variety. Each year, he selectively harvests only the quality fruits to supply the market, especially the capital city of Phnom Penh, which has significant demand. Currently, farm owners and many workers are engrossed in harvesting, packaging, and transporting the produce to the market to meet customer needs. Mr. Long Vibol further explained that the natural avocado season in Mondulkiri runs from May to November. Therefore, he advised that citizens should clearly verify the source of the fruits, as avocados sold outside the season are not necessarily products from Mondulkiri farmers. Regarding crop maintenance, he mentioned that his family focuses on using natural compost produced in-house. This helps the crops grow well, reduces the use of chemical fertilizers, and lowers production costs. He emphasized that most avocado farmers in Mondulkiri focus on quality production to maintain the reputation of Mondulkiri avocados. He also reiterated his call for consumers to clearly check the origin of products before deciding to purchase, in order to obtain quality produce and contribute to supporting local farmers.
