Cambodia Enhances Training for Buddhist Ritual Leaders to Preserve Tradition and Unify Social Norms

Cambodia has concluded the 54th session of its training program on the "Role, Duties, and Ethics of Khmer Achars (Buddhist Ritual Leaders)," held over five days from September 21 to 25, 2026. The closing ceremony took place on September 25. His Excellency Chai Borin, Minister of Cults and Religion, presided over the closing ceremony. The event was attended by ministry leaders, instructors, and participants, including monks, male Achars, and female Achars. A total of 239 individuals, comprising 18 monks, 239 male Achars, and 4 female Achars, successfully completed the training. During the ceremony, His Excellency the Minister recalled that the "Role, Duties, and Ethics of Khmer Achars" training program was a high-level initiative conceived by Samdech Techo Hun Sen. Samdech Hun Sen had observed that the practices of Achars, who lead ceremonies such as weddings and other religious events, varied significantly, leading to unresolved disputes. Consequently, he issued a high-level recommendation for the Ministry of Cults and Religion to research and establish this training program. The primary objectives are to preserve and promote the values of Buddhism, and to elevate the cultural, civilized, traditional, and customary values of the Khmer people, ensuring their prosperity and longevity. A particular focus is placed on preventing the emergence of "Achar crises" within Cambodian society. Under the pragmatic leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Bovor Thipadei Hun Manet, during the 7th legislature of the National Assembly, the Royal Government of Cambodia continues to pay close attention to the preservation and development of religious beliefs and the nation's excellent traditions and customs. This effort aims to guide the organization of religious ceremonies, wedding formats, and other rituals towards accuracy and unified principles. Furthermore, it seeks to build exemplary groups that contribute to enhancing morality, virtue, and solidarity within society.
