Japan Deploys Helicopters to Combat Kalimantan Forest Fires

Japan has deployed three CH-47 Chinook helicopters to assist in the efforts to extinguish forest and peat fires (Karhutla) in Kalimantan, Indonesia. The mission commenced on Wednesday (16/9), although initial flights were delayed due to thick smoke blanketing the skies. According to government data, Karhutla has already devastated approximately 600,000 hectares of land throughout August. In response to the escalating situation, Indonesian President Prabowo has called for firm sanctions against those responsible for illegal land burning. This Japanese assistance comes as Karhutla remains a significant issue, not only impacting local environments but also contributing to transboundary haze that affects neighboring countries. These fires are often exacerbated during the dry season, frequently linked to land clearing practices for agriculture. However, recent years have seen an intensification of these fires, potentially linked to changing climatic patterns.
