President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will summon the Chinese ambassador amid rising tensions over a recent incident in the South China Sea, a presidential communications official said on Tuesday. The move comes a day after both China and the Philippines accused each other of provoking tensions at a disputed shoal. China had earlier on Tuesday said it had summoned the Philippines’ ambassador. This development further heightens concerns in the Philippines regarding China's maritime assertiveness in the South China Sea. Manila consistently emphasizes the importance of freedom of navigation and the protection of its rights within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) under international law. Beijing, however, maintains its claims of historical rights in the South China Sea, justifying its activities in the region. The escalating tensions could have implications for the broader regional security landscape. The Philippines is strengthening its security cooperation with its ally, the United States, while also seeking avenues for peaceful resolution through dialogue within ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).
