Cambodia Cracks Down on Illegal Fishing, Destroys 650m of Nets, Releases Over 10kg of Fry

In Poilom District, Prey Veng Province, Cambodia, fisheries officials and local police have intensified crackdowns on illegal fishing. During a patrol in the Kampong Chna protected area, approximately 650 meters of illegal gill nets (ghost nets), 340 stakes, and 12 gill net traps were confiscated and destroyed on-site. Simultaneously, over 10 kilograms of fish fry were released into natural lakes. Hun Savi, Deputy Chief of the Stung Slot Fisheries Administration, emphasized the importance of protecting national aquatic resources, especially during the fishing ban period. The administration, in collaboration with Poilom District authorities, conducts regular patrols along rivers and protected areas to prevent illegal fishing. This operation was led by a committee headed by Pet Sawen, Deputy Governor of Poilom District. This initiative aims to ensure the sustainable use of Cambodia's fisheries resources and protect the fishing sector, which is a cornerstone of the local economy. The removal of illegal fishing gear and the release of fish fry are expected to contribute to securing future catches and maintaining ecological balance.
