EDL Rushes to Restore Power Network Damaged by Floods in Northern Laos

EDL Crews Rush to Restore Flood-Damaged Power Network in Luang Namtha (KPL) Electricité du Laos (EDL) technicians are working urgently to restore electricity supplies in flood-affected areas of Luang Namtha Province after recent flooding damaged parts of the power distribution network. On September 2, 2026, EDL Director Mr. Souksavath Sosouphan, together with the Head of the EDL Office, Head of the Northern Power System Management Division and technical staff, inspected recovery operations in the Nateuy–Boten area, including Ban Louang, Ban Khon, Ban Pasak, Ban Pung and Ban Mai. The team also inspected operations at the 115 kV Ban Mai Substation and instructed station personnel to closely monitor system performance to ensure a safe, stable and sufficient electricity supply for consumers. Recovery work includes replacing flood-damaged electricity meters in six villages—Ban Mai, Ban Pung, Ban Pasak, Ban Thongkhoua, Ban Donkhoun and Ban Tha-or—where electricity has already been restored. Utility pole marking along the Nateuy–Boten line has also been completed, while network repairs carried out in cooperation with the Nam Talarn Power Company and along the Luang Namtha–Nalae line have been completed at four locations. EDL said recovery operations will continue until electricity supplies are fully restored to all affected villages. Mr. Souksavath commended the technical teams for their perseverance and commitment during the recovery work, stressing that consumer safety must remain the top priority. He also urged the crews to accelerate repairs so that affected communities can regain reliable access to electricity as soon as possible. National defence personnel in Oudomxay Province have continued emergency flood relief operations for a fourth consecutive day, helping affected residents recover their homes and clear debris following severe flooding in Xay District. Flooding across Khammouane Province between July and August 2026 has affected around 151,000 residents across all 10 districts, with preliminary damage estimated at more than 275.57 billion kip, as provincial authorities accelerate recovery efforts and further damage assessments.
