Unpaid Traffic Fines to Delay Tax Sticker Issuance Under New Thai Rule

The Royal Thai Police and the Department of Land Transport have signed an amended agreement to link traffic ticket data under a new electronic system, set to take effect on August 1. This initiative aims to enhance the enforcement of unpaid traffic fines, aligning with Administrative Court rulings. Under the revised system, motorists renewing their annual vehicle tax will be able to check and pay any outstanding fines at Department of Land Transport offices. While vehicle owners with unpaid fines can still renew their tax, they will not receive their original tax sticker until all outstanding fines are settled. This measure applies exclusively to tickets issued on or after August 1, and will not be applied retroactively. Authorities stated that information on unpaid tickets will only be transferred to the system after the completion of the legal notification process, which includes the issuance of a traffic ticket and a formal reminder notice. This process is anticipated to take between 60 to 90 days, with unpaid fines likely appearing in the renewal system around October or November. The updated system incorporates electronic records of traffic tickets, reminder notices, proof of delivery, payment details, and case status, enabling motorists to verify information before making payments.
