Chiang Rai Village Official Shoots Knife Attacker to Save Son

CHIANG RAI – A violent confrontation in a quiet Chiang Rai village on the evening of July 31 resulted in a fatal shooting when an assistant village headman killed a local man who was attacking his son with a knife. Police are investigating the incident, with preliminary reports suggesting the father acted in self-defense. The incident occurred in Ban Ja Tae village, located in the Mae Yao subdistrict of Chiang Rai province. According to initial police accounts, the deceased, identified as Mr. Ja Kue, 55, suddenly attacked Mr. Nikom’s 24-year-old son, Mr. Sit, with a sharp knife. Mr. Sit sustained a severe knife wound to his arm. Witnesses reported that Mr. Nikom, the assistant village headman, witnessed the attack on his son. Driven by fear for his child’s safety, Mr. Nikom reportedly drew his personal 9mm pistol and fired a single shot at the attacker. The bullet struck Mr. Ja Kue in the head, causing immediate death. The attacker's body was found at the scene by responding officers from the Mae Yao Police Station, who had been alerted by an emergency call. Mr. Nikom did not attempt to flee and remained at the scene, surrendering to the authorities. He has been taken into custody for further questioning. Investigators have secured the crime scene and are collecting physical evidence and witness statements. The community has been shaken by the sudden outbreak of violence.
