Vietnam President Addresses UN on Peace and Development

Vietnamese President To Lam delivered a significant speech at the High-Level Debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, held at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 22 (local time). President Lam called for respect for principles such as peace, independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs, and for the strengthening of multilateralism to address the complex challenges facing the international community. In his address, President Lam underscored the importance of international cooperation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He specifically urged joint efforts to tackle urgent issues including poverty eradication, climate change mitigation, and improving access to education and healthcare. He also affirmed Vietnam's commitment as a nation prioritizing peace and development to contribute to international peace and stability. Under its one-party system, Vietnam has achieved economic growth and is increasing its influence in the international arena. Particularly in its relations with China, while facing issues such as the South China Sea, Vietnam maintains economic ties and pursues a balanced diplomacy. In this context, President Lam's address on the international stage of the UN is noteworthy as it indicates the direction of Vietnam's foreign policy. President Lam reiterated Vietnam's stance of respecting international law and supporting the peaceful resolution of disputes based on the principles of the UN Charter. He expressed the belief that all countries should be treated equally and with dignity.
