Vietnamese Tilapia Sees Soaring Demand in Brazil, Imports Surge 289-Fold
Vietnamese tilapia exports to Brazil have surged, with import value increasing 289-fold. Bilateral trade is also on an upward trend, and Vietnam expresses interest in expanding cooperation in areas like renewable energy and AI.
Vietnamese tilapia has seen soaring demand in the Brazilian market, with import value surging a record 289-fold year-on-year. This marks a significant success for Vietnam's food exports. Ambassador Bui Van Nghi to Brazil reported that two-way trade between Vietnam and Brazil reached US$4.22 billion in the first six months of 2026, up 16.8% year-on-year. Brazil's exports to Vietnam exceeded US$2 billion, a 16.6% increase, while its imports from Vietnam totalled about US$2.11 billion, up 17%. The surge in trade is attributed to the recognition of the quality and price competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products, particularly tilapia, in the Brazilian market. Vietnam's planned agricultural policies under its one-party system, coupled with efforts to enhance production management in line with international standards, are believed to be driving this export growth. Ambassador Nghi expressed Vietnam's interest in strengthening cooperation with Brazil in areas such as renewable energy, environmental technologies, and high-tech sectors including artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, and the semiconductor industry. This signifies Vietnam's ambition to shift its economic structure from being primarily a primary product exporter to one with higher added value. The Brazil-Vietnam Chamber of Commerce (BVC) and its Espirito Santo Chapter, with support from the Vietnamese Embassy, signed an MoU to enhance cooperation and expand business opportunities for enterprises from both countries. This suggests the potential for deeper economic ties between the two nations, extending beyond trade. Vietnam's economy continues to grow steadily, despite the complexities of its relationship with China. The success of tilapia exports underscores the resilience of the Vietnamese economy, supported by diversified trade strategies and continuous efforts in quality improvement.
