Cambodia Urges Global Unity for a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World

Cambodia has strongly urged the international community to unite in achieving a world free of nuclear weapons. This was stated by Mr. Keo Chhea, Cambodia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a high-level plenary meeting at UN Headquarters in New York on August 31, 2026, to commemorate the International Day against Nuclear Tests. During the meeting, Mr. Keo Chhea emphasized Cambodia's unwavering commitment to realizing a nuclear-weapon-free world and ending nuclear testing. He also urged all countries to demonstrate political will to bring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) into force. Furthermore, he welcomed nuclear-weapon states that wish to sign and ratify the Protocol to the Treaty on the Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) without any conditions. He appealed to other nuclear-weapon states to follow suit. Cambodia has actively engaged in promoting nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation for many years, and this statement is seen as part of its ongoing foreign policy. Regional denuclearization, in particular, is a crucial element of Cambodia's security strategy.
