DPWH to Widen Drainage Inlets on NCR Major Roads to Combat Flooding

MANILA, Philippines — In a bid to reduce floods during stormy weather in the National Capital Region, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is eyeing to widen drainage inlets of major roads in NCR and make them similar to those used along EDSA. Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the DPWH would replace the existing drainage systems along major NCR roads with 1.5-meter-wide inlets, like those used along EDSA and other national roads. Dizon said this design would triple the absorptive capacity of drainage systems during heavy rains. “Aside from what is being done along Estrella, we would also fix those in flood-prone roads in Metro Manila,” Dizon said during his inspection of the newly installed inlets on Thursday. The DPWH came under fire when the new asphalt overlay along EDSA at Guadalupe and Estrella in Makati bore potholes when submerged in floods brought by the enhanced southwest monsoon.
