17 Missing After Vietnamese Vessel Sinks Near Kagitingan Reef; 6 Rescued

Six more crew members have been rescued after a Vietnamese cargo vessel sank near Kagitingan Reef in the West Philippine Sea, with 17 individuals still missing, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced Sunday. The vessel, identified as Khoi Nguyen 18, went down on the evening of July 25, 2026, with a total of 62 crew members aboard. Following directives from PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, the agency has deployed the BRP Malapascua (MRRV-4403) and a PCG air asset from Palawan to initiate immediate search and rescue (SAR) operations. "The PCG Command Center is coordinating closely with the VCG (Vietnamese Coast Guard) for other operational information needed to guide the search and rescue response," PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab stated. She added, "We are also utilizing the Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System to guide responding assets and improve the probability of locating the missing persons." Meanwhile, Chinese state-run news agency CCTV reported that Chinese teams were responsible for rescuing the Vietnamese sailors near the Chinese-occupied reef. This incident highlights the active maritime traffic in the South China Sea and the inherent risks involved, as well as the framework for international rescue cooperation.
