Army Major Who Died Rescuing a Person Found Deceased

The body of Army Major Tran Van Tung, 39, who went missing after diving into the Tra Ly River to rescue a person, was found in the afternoon of September 13 in Hung Yen province, more than 32 hours after he was swept away by the current. Rescue team 116 found Major Tung's body at 6:05 PM, about 350 meters from the foot of Cau Bo bridge. The Hung Yen Provincial Military Command confirmed his identity and handed over the body to his family for funeral arrangements. The incident occurred around 9:40 AM on September 12. Major Tung was riding his motorbike back to his unit after completing his duties. While crossing Cau Bo bridge, he witnessed a young man struggling with his mother. Major Tung, along with a passerby named Doan Van Tien, intervened to mediate. The mother stated that her son had intentions of jumping off the bridge. After being persuaded by the two men, the young man agreed to return home and asked Major Tung to escort him. However, as Major Tung turned back to get his motorbike, the young man suddenly jumped into the Tra Ly River. Major Tung immediately dove in to rescue him, swimming close to the victim, but was swept away by the strong current. Major Tran Van Tung was born in 1976 and joined the army in September 2005. He served as the Battalion Commander of Battalion 3, Infantry Regiment 568, under the Hung Yen Provincial Military Command. He was married with two children. The young man who jumped into the river is from Dong Hung commune, Hung Yen province. As of the evening of September 13, authorities had not yet found him.
