Butuan Haze Eases Slightly, Air Still Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur — Haze in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, slightly eased Sunday morning as particulate matter (PM) levels declined, but air quality remained unhealthy for sensitive groups, the city government said. Based on the 8 a.m. air quality assessment, the city’s two monitoring stations recorded PM2.5 levels within the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category. This indicates that individuals belonging to sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. The cause of the haze has not been officially determined, but common sources include agricultural burning, forest fires, and industrial emissions. Such air pollution issues often become apparent in the Philippines during the dry season. City officials are advising residents to limit outdoor activities and avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors. They also recommend minimizing ventilation indoors and using appropriate respiratory protection, such as N95 masks. The duration of this air quality issue remains uncertain, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
