Thai-Cambodian Maritime Border Talks: First Conciliation Meeting Concludes

Thailand and Cambodia have concluded their first conciliation meeting under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, held in Singapore from September 14-16, 2024. Benjamin Sukkanjanati, Director-General of the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, stated that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeaw reported the meeting's outcomes to Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Benjamin described the meeting's atmosphere as having 'nothing special,' noting that the Prime Minister acknowledged the discussion's overview and content and offered advice. However, he declined to disclose specific details, emphasizing that they await further negotiations. This initial meeting was intended to lay the groundwork, and the results of the next session are crucial. He reiterated that the discussions proceeded in a 'good atmosphere.' Responding to Thai public support for the government's negotiation stance, Benjamin affirmed that the nation's interests are naturally prioritized. Regarding future consultations with the Prime Minister, Benjamin stated that none are scheduled at this time, as the process has just begun and is expected to be lengthy.
