Cambodia Observes Buddhist Lent with Donations to Monks
In Cambodia, a religious event was held near Poipet during the Buddhist Lent season, where political leaders donated money and goods to monks in 24 temples. This event aimed to preserve traditional culture and support the monks' spiritual practices.
A traditional religious ceremony was held on Tuesday, August 4th, near Poipet in Kandal Province, central Cambodia, coinciding with the Buddhist Lent season. During the event, a party working group led by Dr. Kak Ben Wong, representing Dr. Aun Ponn Monirath (a member of the party's Central Committee and head of the Kandal Provincial Working Group), presented Lent candles, goods, and monetary donations to monks in 24 temples within the Po Nhear Lork district. Dr. Kak emphasized the significance of the Lent ceremony, noting it as a cherished Buddhist tradition that also supports monks in their three-month retreat, enabling them to practice dharma and vinaya comfortably. The ceremony also included devotees paying homage to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) and offering merit to their ancestors and brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending the land from Siamese invasion, praying for blessings from their good deeds. The donated items to each temple included a pair of Lent candles, two sets of robes, two cases of bottled water, two cases of soft drinks, two cases of fish sauce, two cases of soy sauce, two cases of instant noodles, and one bag of rice. Additionally, 500,000 Riel were donated for temple construction, 100,000 Riel to each temple abbot, 50,000 Riel per monk, 40,000 Riel to the officiating monks, and 10,000 Riel to each participating elder. This act of donation is reported as a commendable gesture reflecting the commitment of Dr. Kak Ben Wong and Dr. Aun Ponn Monirath to promoting Buddhism and preserving the rich cultural traditions of the Khmer people.
