Vietnam Sees Significant Drop in Traffic Fatalities During National Day Holiday

Reports from the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security) indicate a significant reduction in traffic accidents during the 5-day National Day holiday (September 2). From August 29 to September 2, a total of 192 traffic accidents occurred nationwide, resulting in 93 deaths and 134 injuries. This represents a decrease of 26.15% in accidents, 36.73% in fatalities, and 16.25% in injuries compared to the same holiday period in 2025. Notably, there were no traffic accidents on railways or waterways during this period. On September 2nd alone, 29 traffic accidents occurred across the country, causing 13 deaths and 21 injuries. This marks a substantial reduction of 53.97% in accidents, 63.89% in fatalities, and 44.74% in injuries compared to the same day last year, reflecting intensified efforts against drunk driving, with 11,621 cases processed. Traffic police representatives stated that local traffic police forces mobilized their personnel to the maximum extent to patrol, control, regulate, and direct traffic during the holiday. Through direct patrols, monitoring systems, technical equipment, and public feedback, traffic police nationwide detected 97,621 traffic safety violations. On roads, 76,845 violations were recorded, including 11,621 for drunk driving, 17,074 for speeding, 388 for overloading, 138 for oversized loads, 658 for exceeding passenger capacity, 857 for using mobile phones while driving, and 29 for drug-related offenses. High-speed traffic patrol teams from the Traffic Police Department inspected 8,938 vehicles, issuing citations for 701 violations. Specifically, 11 cases of failing to maintain safe distances between vehicles on highways were recorded, involving 8 passenger buses, 2 cars, and 1 truck. Notably, on September 2nd, no violations related to safe distances on highways were detected. As vehicle traffic increased towards urban areas on the final day of the holiday, traffic police proactively implemented traffic diversion plans, focusing on expressways, entry points to cities, and areas prone to congestion. For instance, from the afternoon of September 1st, to alleviate traffic pressure and prevent prolonged congestion on the Cao Bo-Phap Van expressway, Route 3 of the High-Speed Traffic Patrol Team diverted traffic by utilizing the opposing lane for vehicles heading towards Hanoi on the section from Km259 to Km211. This diversion strategy was continued on September 2nd based on actual traffic conditions to enhance traffic flow and minimize congestion. The report highlighted that on September 2nd, no violations of safe distance regulations on highways were found. In addition to direct patrols, traffic police continued to utilize monitoring systems, professional technical equipment, and public feedback received via Facebook, Zalo, and the VNeTraffic app to promptly identify and address violations. Overall, traffic accidents decreased across all three key indicators, with fatalities dropping by 36.73% compared to the previous year. On September 2nd alone, fatalities fell by 63.89%.
