A Malay music group from Medan, Lebah Begantong, has gone viral on social media after performing a humorous pantun at the 28th-anniversary event of Indonesia's PAN party. Their performance, which playfully mentioned several attending officials, earned laughter and a photo opportunity with President Prabowo Subianto.
The performance of the Medan-based Malay music group Lebah Begantong has captured significant attention on social media following their appearance at the 28th-anniversary celebration of Indonesia's National Mandate Party (PAN) in Jakarta. The group not only performed songs but also delivered a pantun, a traditional form of Malay poetry, infused with jokes that playfully mentioned numerous government officials present. President Prabowo Subianto was among those who enjoyed the show. After their performance, members of Lebah Begantong were invited to approach the President for a photo opportunity. The pantun also humorously referenced several prominent figures, including Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, MPR Chairman Ahmad Muzani, Deputy Speaker of the DPR Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, Chairman of the DPD Sultan Bachtiar Najamudin, General Chairman of Golkar Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Food and Chairman of the General Assembly of PAN Zulkifli Hasan, Chairman of the General Assembly of PKB Muhaimin Iskandar, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Videos of the performance quickly spread across social media platforms, with Sufmi Dasco Ahmad even re-uploading a segment of Lebah Begantong's act on his official account. Lebah Begantong was formed in Medan in 2017, initially comprising 10 individuals united by their passion for music and Malay culture. Their early journey involved performing in various locations without payment to promote Malay art. The original lineup included vocalists Najibullah Al Maidani Lubis and Eva Gusmala Yanti, along with musicians on guitar, keyboard, violin, drums, and accordion. What sets Lebah Begantong apart is their blend of Malay music with humorous pantun. This unique approach has broadened their audience, attracting younger demographics in addition to their initial base of listeners aged 40 and above. Their popularity surged in 2020 when one of their performance videos went viral in North Sumatra. The group is known for songs such as "Udin Sedunia," "Tundang-Tundangan," and "Tanjung Katung," and they released a mini-album in 2018.
