Canggu Bar Shooting: Businessman Used Modified Legal Gun

The origin of the Glock pistol used by a businessman from Jakarta (49, initial HSH) in a shooting incident at a bar in Canggu, Kuta Utara, Badung, has been revealed. Police confirmed that the firearm was legally obtained, complete with a Special Firearm Permit (IKSA) officially registered under the suspect's name in his home region. Despite possessing a legal permit, the businessman is being investigated for alleged misuse of the firearm. Kasat Reskrim Polres Badung, AKP Azarul Ahmad, stated, "This firearm was obtained and has a valid permit, possessing an IKSA and is permitted for use." However, police found indications of criminal violations, as the main components of the Glock pistol owned by the suspect were reportedly modified, making them inconsistent with the permit documents and leading to misuse. Azarul explained that the official permit technically only allowed the use of a .32 caliber barrel. However, during the shooting incident at the bar in Canggu, the perpetrator was found to have modified and fitted a 9mm barrel onto the firearm. "What should have been used is a .32 caliber barrel in accordance with the permit and documents, but the individual possessed a 9mm barrel. That is what we are currently investigating regarding the ownership of this barrel," he added. The suspect, a pure entrepreneur without a public official background, also drew attention regarding his freedom to carry a firearm in his daily activities. Police acknowledged that the possession permit he held authorized him to carry the firearm on his person wherever he went. "The individual is an entrepreneur. According to the permit he holds, he is allowed to carry the weapon anywhere because of the permit he possesses, so he carried the firearm," explained Azarul. The suspect utilized this carrying permit, tucking it into his waistband when visiting the bar, and even carried it on a flight when he fled to Jakarta. The firearm was only removed and stored at his private residence in Jakarta before the perpetrator moved towards the airport to flee abroad. Regarding how HSH managed to enter the bar without being checked, Azarul mentioned that HSH was not subjected to a search upon entering the bar, allegedly because he had visited multiple times and was familiar with the security staff. "From our investigation, the individual was allowed to enter and was not searched upon entering the bar because he had visited frequently and was known to the security personnel," said Azarul. "The individual entered the bar carrying the firearm tucked into his waistband. So, at the crime scene, the suspect got into an argument with another patron, was provoked, and then drew his firearm. He owns a business," he continued. Kapolres Badung, AKBP Joseph Edward Purba, emphasized that the alleged negligence of SOPs in the entertainment venue would be thoroughly investigated. This is because the suspect managed to bring in a firearm without physical examination or scanning by the bar's security personnel until the shooting incident occurred. "We will conduct further investigations into that. Whether there were SOP violations or anything else," Joseph asserted. The former Kapolres Karangasem confirmed that the exact cause of the fight would be investigated, and the foreign tourist who became a victim in the incident would be summoned again. Meanwhile, investigators will also conduct forensic laboratory testing on the firearm used by the perpetrator to complete the investigation file. "The foreign national involved in the altercation is still undergoing examination. We will call them again. Regarding the evidence or the weapon used, we will conduct ballistic tests and report them to Labfor," said Joseph. Joseph explained that the altercation that led to the shooting occurred on Friday (July 17) at 02:10 WITA. The fight between the perpetrator and AD took place next to the DJ table sofa 04. Witnessing the event, the two victims, namely security guard IMYM and the Moroccan victim EA, helped to break up the commotion. IMYM was in front of the perpetrator, while EA was directly behind IMYM. Suddenly, IMYM felt pushed from behind and fell, positioning himself in front of the perpetrator at a distance of about 1 meter. At that moment, unbeknownst to IMYM, EA was directly behind him. As he fell, a shot was instantly fired from the firearm carried by the perpetrator. The bullet unexpectedly penetrated IMYM's left thigh and hit EA's knee. Additionally, other patrons fell and sustained head injuries from broken glass. For this case, the police are applying multiple charges. The perpetrator faces a prison sentence of over a decade due to the illegal use of firearm components. "For his actions, the suspect is charged under Article 306 of the Criminal Code, with a maximum prison sentence of 15 years. Then, Article 466 Paragraph (2) of the Criminal Code, with a prison sentence of up to 5 years," concluded the Badung Police Chief.
