Minister of Culture Urges Indonesian Diaspora in Spain to Lead Cultural Diplomacy

MADRID - Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, during his visit to Madrid, Spain, urged the Indonesian diaspora residing there to become the 'spearhead of cultural diplomacy' by introducing Indonesian culture to the international community. Speaking at a dialogue with the diaspora at the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid, Zon highlighted that Indonesian citizens abroad hold a crucial position due to their direct contact with the people of their host countries. "Diaspora has an important role in maintaining, caring for, and promoting Indonesian culture at the international level," said Fadli. He emphasized that Indonesia possesses vast cultural wealth, including tangible and intangible heritage and UNESCO World Heritage sites, which must be continuously introduced and passed down to remain alive, not merely listed or stored. Zon also touched upon the recent restructuring of the Ministry of Culture into an independent entity, aimed at enabling more focused protection, development, utilization, and nurturing of culture. He encouraged the diaspora to create opportunities for art performances, exhibitions, discussions, and the introduction of Indonesian history and traditions in Spain. He also promoted the Ministry's 'Museum Passport' program designed to increase public interest in museums as places of historical learning, encouraging the diaspora to visit museums when they return to Indonesia. He stated that preserving culture is a mandate of Article 32 of the 1945 Constitution, making it a shared responsibility not only for the government but also for all citizens, especially those living abroad.
