Vietnam Debates Publishing Law Amendments to Adapt to Digital Era

On August 9, the National Assembly of Vietnam held a discussion on the draft amendments to the Publishing Law. National Assembly deputies actively exchanged opinions on new contents of the draft law, including the management of online literature, electronic publishing, deposit and post-inspection, and the responsibilities of digital platforms. Specifically, proposals were made to strengthen penalties for copyright infringement by AI, emphasizing the necessity of legal frameworks to keep pace with the rapid development of digital publishing. Deputies highlighted the importance of creating a superior legal corridor for the digital publishing sector. With the widespread adoption of the internet and digital technologies in Vietnam, not only traditional books but also online literary works and e-books are rapidly gaining popularity. In this context, amending the current Publishing Law to adapt to the digital era has become an urgent task. The proposed amendments shift the focus from regulations centered on print media to the management, distribution, and copyright protection of digital content. This initiative aims to enable Vietnam's publishing industry to achieve healthy growth while adapting to new technological innovations.
