Mizzima Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko will make a working visit to Myanmar at the invitation of Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s military-run media reported on 30 June. The trip will carry lower diplomatic weight than Lukashenko’s last visit to Myanmar in November 2025, when he traveled to Naypyidaw as Myanmar’s first official state guest — and first foreign head of state to visit the country at all — since the 2021 coup. Min Aung Hlaing had separately travelled to Belarus twice in 2025, in March and June, for talks with Lukashenko. The new visit was announced two days after Lukashenko held a more than three-hour meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on 29 June, according to Chinese and Belarusian state media. That meeting followed two days of talks between Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin at Putin’s Valdai residence on 26 and 27 June. Asked by Xi whether he had travelled directly from Belarus, Lukashenko said he had come straight from Moscow after meeting Putin, Belarusian state media reported. Xi told Lukashenko that China and Belarus were at a “historic peak” in their relationship and pledged continued support for Belarus’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to Chinese state broadcaster CGTN. Min Aung Hlaing made his own visit to China from 15 to 19 June, meeting Xi, Premier Li Qiang, and National People’s Congress Standing Committee Chairman Zhao Leji in what was his second overseas trip since being inaugurated president in April. He had visited India in late May, his first trip abroad as president. Lukashenko, in power in Belarus since 1994 and frequently described as Europe’s last dictator, has provided military and political support to Myanmar’s junta since the 2021 coup, including supplying weapons and voting against United Nations resolutions condemning the military takeover.
