US Aircraft Carrier USS George Washington Makes First Visit to Da Nang, Vietnam

The U.S. Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington docked at Tien Sa Port in Da Nang City, central Vietnam, on July 30, 2026. This marks the fourth visit by a U.S. aircraft carrier to Vietnam, following previous visits in 2018, 2020, and 2023. A welcome ceremony was attended by representatives from Vietnam's Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Da Nang Department of Foreign Affairs, and other relevant Vietnamese agencies. During their stay in Da Nang, commanding officers and crew of the USS George Washington are scheduled to pay courtesy calls on leaders of the Da Nang Municipal People's Committee and the Naval Region 3 Command. Furthermore, approximately 6,000 officers and sailors will participate in a range of community engagement activities, including cultural, sports, and English-language exchanges, and gift presentations for a local orphanage. The visit aims to maintain and further strengthen Vietnam-U.S. relations in line with the two countries' Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development. It also serves to reaffirm Vietnam's capability to provide logistical and technical support for hosting foreign naval vessels, while helping to promote the country's image and its people to the international community. Vietnam has been rapidly deepening its relations with the United States in recent years, with cooperation in the security sector being particularly advanced. This aircraft carrier visit is seen as a symbolic event in strengthening these ties. Under Vietnam's one-party system, foreign policy prioritizes maximizing national interests and ensuring security. The strengthening of relations with the U.S. is also considered to have an element of checking China's growing influence in the region.
