Cambodia Reviews Progress on Reservoir Dam Construction

On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology convened a technical meeting at its headquarters to discuss the progress of the second reservoir dam development project, situated on the Pramoy River in Rokat village, Phnom Kravanh district, Poipet province. The meeting was chaired by H.E. Thor Cheath, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, and attended by representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the construction company, and project consultants. During the session, detailed technical discussions were held regarding the dam's construction progress. H.E. Minister Thor Cheath instructed the attendees to focus on adjusting technical standards, evaluating technical characteristics based on actual geological conditions, resolving past technical issues, and revising the action plan. This is aimed at promoting the smooth and efficient implementation of this multi-purpose reservoir project, ensuring it responds promptly to the needs of the citizens. This project is part of a national initiative to strengthen water resource management in Cambodia, aiming to ensure a stable supply of agricultural water and expand its use for industrial and domestic purposes. Poipet province, in particular, is a region with a strong agricultural sector, and the modernization of irrigation facilities is considered essential for the sustainable development of the regional economy. However, infrastructure development in Cambodia often faces challenges such as unexpected changes in geological conditions, compliance of technical standards with international norms, and funding issues. This meeting is considered a crucial step in identifying such potential risks early and optimizing the construction process.
