Vietnam Plans 3 Dams on Red, Duong, and Da Rivers for Water Management and Climate Adaptation

Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has agreed in principle to research and propose the investment in building dams on the Red River, Duong River, and Da River. The objective is to regulate water resources during the dry season, ensure water security, improve the environment, develop waterway transportation, and adapt to climate change. The project prioritizes securing a stable water supply, particularly during the dry season when water scarcity can become severe. It is also expected to contribute to improving river water quality and revitalizing inland waterway transport. Furthermore, Vietnam has been facing the impacts of climate change in recent years, including extreme weather events and rising sea levels. The construction of these dams is positioned as part of the country's adaptation strategies to these environmental changes. In the capital city of Hanoi, the modernization of the dike system is proceeding in conjunction with the plan to develop a scenic axis along the Red River. Public consultations are also underway regarding the land use plan for the Red River area. This indicates the Vietnamese government's effort to build social consensus for development projects, even within its one-party system, by considering their impact on people's lives and the environment. As Vietnam continues its economic growth, water resource management is fundamental to agricultural production, industrial water supply, and urban domestic water provision, making its importance increasingly critical.
