Junta tightens restrictions on Myanmar political parties after elections

The regime’s election commission looks to eliminate more parties, in line with the wishes of self-appointed president Min Aung Hlaing. At least 10 political parties have been ordered to dissolve so far. This includes the National League for Democracy (NLD), which won the 2020 general election. The NLD was declared illegal by the military junta, which seized power in a coup d'état. The military junta is enforcing new laws through the election commission that tighten the requirements for party registration and restrict party activities. These laws are widely seen as targeting parties that oppose the military regime. The military junta claims that these measures are “to restore democracy” and to ensure “fair and free elections.” However, many countries and international organizations have condemned these measures as an attempt by the military regime to maintain its power. The crackdown on political parties by the military junta represents a serious setback for Myanmar's democratization process. Many citizens are concerned that the military regime is ignoring the will of the people and trying to maintain its power.
