Cambodia Conducts Lottery for Market Stalls for Displaced Traders Near Thai Border

Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia, on August 1, 2026, organized a lottery for market stall allocations to support displaced traders whose homes were lost due to Thai military incursions and who remain unable to return to their residences as their properties are still controlled by Thai forces. Led by Mr. Um Ratry, Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province, accompanied by Deputy Governor Mr. Hyl Raya and provincial and district working groups, the lottery aimed to provide livelihood opportunities for these affected citizens. This initiative is in line with the directives of Prime Minister Samdech Mahabawor Thipadei Hun Manet, who prioritizes the welfare of the Cambodian people. Through the efforts of the working group, including Senior Minister Dr. Kun Kim and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Dr. Dith Tina, along with Advisor to the King Mr. Ke Kimyan, 400 hectares of land were donated for the establishment of suitable shelters for the displaced. These individuals will be provided with land and housing in "Romcham Village," located in Slakram Commune, Svay Chek District, where they can reside and conduct their businesses. The government has also arranged for a market to facilitate trade for these displaced merchants. Following the completion of market preparations, the provincial authorities conducted the lottery to ensure fair distribution of suitable stalls for the traders to earn a living. Applications from traders were meticulously reviewed and assessed by provincial, district, and local authorities before the lottery. In the first phase, over 300 stalls were allocated. Further lotteries will be organized for the remaining traders in subsequent stages. The Banteay Meanchey provincial authorities have also appealed to the traders to cooperate in maintaining the environmental cleanliness of the market once operations commence. Furthermore, stalls have been categorized by type of goods sold, with separate areas designated for groceries, clothing, and fresh food items such as seafood and fish.
